Bamberg
A medieval Venice on the Regnitz
All destinations
A UNESCO-listed town in Upper Franconia, Bamberg rises on seven hills where the Regnitz and Main rivers meet. Its Old Town Hall, the Altes Rathaus, is painted in marvellous frescoes and stands on a bridge in the middle of the river, as if it had washed up against the current. The cathedral holds the tomb of Emperor Henry II and the mysterious Bamberger Reiter, while Klein Venedig — Little Venice — lines the Regnitz with half-timbered fishermen's houses mirrored in the water. Beer gardens, smoked Rauchbier and winding lanes of sandstone and half-timber make Bamberg a perfect day beyond the Bohemian border.
