Cheb

A thousand-year town on the edge of the forest

All destinations

Among the oldest towns in Bohemia, Cheb guards a thousand years of history beneath its red rooftops. The square is anchored by the Špalíček, a strange and picturesque block of eleven medieval merchant houses pressed together, and by the castle with its Romanesque imperial palace, the Kaiserpfalz, one of the rarest secular Romanesque buildings north of the Alps. St. Nicholas Church and the winding lanes recall the day in 1634 when the imperial general Wallenstein was murdered here. Beyond the town lie the otherworldly Soos nature reserve, with its bubbling mineral mudpots, and the Skalka reservoir, quiet country for a slow afternoon.
