Karlovy Vary
The imperial spa of emperors and tsars
Karlovy Vary rises in a wooded valley along the winding Teplá river, its pastel façades climbing the hillsides in tiers. At its heart the Hot Spring, Vřídlo, shoots a column of seventy-degree water into the air, feeding the elegant colonnades where visitors sip mineral water from porcelain sipping cups. The Mill Colonnade, the Market Colonnade and the Castle Tower trace the town's gilded age, when Goethe, Beethoven and Tsar Peter the Great took the cure. Above it all the Diana observation tower surveys the forests. Moser glass and Becherovka, the secret herbal liqueur, were born here, and the Grandhotel Pupp still keeps a grand continental elegance.
