Plzeň

Where the world's first Pilsner was born

All destinations

Founded in 1295, Plzeň is a confident city of beer, towers and surprising grandeur. The Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew crowns the main square, its spire the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic. Close by stands the Great Synagogue, the third largest in Europe and a moving survivor of a vanished community. Beneath the streets run historic cellars, and at their edge the Pilsner Urquell brewery, where in 1842 the world's first pale lager was brewed and a global style was born. A guided walk weaves Republic Square, the cathedral, the brewery museum and a tasting into a single unhurried story.
